Guide To Dual Boot Ubuntu with Windows 10 (UEFI) in Dell
This blog is aimed to help people who want to dual boot their dell windows 10 system with ubuntu in UEFI mode.
- Create a back up of windows 10 system. It is essential as things can sometimes go wrong even though the probability of that is extremely low if you follow the directions.
- Disable the secure boot. The easiest way to do it is to reboot the system and press F2 continuously at start as soon as dell logo appears. Unwrap the secureboot entry in right panel and disable the secure boot and save changes when prompted to at exit.(Kindly crosscheck whether the booting is done through the UEFI in boot sequence entry).
- Most importantly Disable the Fast start up in windows 10 and also unclick the hibernate option. I cannot stress enough about the importance of these two steps. You could follow the instructions in this link by clicking it. Instructions on how to disable fast startup
- Create space for Ubuntu installation by shrinking the c:// drive or Windows 10 primary partition. Make sure you have atleast 20GB unallocated space for ubuntu installation. Follow the instructions in the given link by clicking it. Instructions to shrink Windows 10 partition for Ubuntu installation
- Create Ubuntu USB Flash Drive. Download the latest Ubuntu ISO image from Ubuntu website. I would prefer the latest 16.04.3 for its Long term support. Now follow the instructions in this official ubuntu link to create your ubuntu flash drive with Rufus Tool. Create a Bootable UBuntu USB Drive
- Boot into Ubuntu Flash drive
- kindly set the username and password when it asks you to do so. Then press continue it will start installing
